CPD LECTURES & TALKS
FREEHAND DRAWING NOW
Trevor Flynn looks at the culture of freehand drawing as it is being practiced both inside and outside of architectural offices. The talk features two short films and 60 slides including winning entries to the Blueprint drawing competition (which Flynn designed) and sketches made by attendees of The Drawing Gym: a course of exercises for architects that refreshes drawing and visualisation skills. The talk illustrates the importance of designers maintaining essential drawing skills that can be put to use as an adjunct of spoken ideas, as a form of rapid idea generation, and as an aid to improve communication.
THE ART OF ENGINEERING
The science of engineering is well documented. In The Art of Engineering we will consider how the mind is expressed by the hand for the eye.We will look at the sovereign role of freehand drawing, both as a thinking tool and as a simple way of communicating complex ideas. Using three categories of drawing: Conversational, Concept, and Form-finding, we will look at why, how and when drawings are made in modern engineering practices. Trevor Flynn will talk about his experience of establishing freehand drawing programmes within large architectural and engineering offices, illustrated with a rich collection of historical and contemporary drawings.
