ESSENTIAL ISOMETRIC DRAWING
FOR INDIVIDUALS
(Online delivery)
Self-directed exercises accessible 24/7 over 12 weeks
Isometric drawing, and its companion Third Angle Projection are the cornerstone of engineering and design drawing. Isometric sketching is the most direct and useful drawing system to master, so it is used widely in engineering, design and architecture. In this course you will blend 3d and technical sketching to be able to read and create Isometric drawings. You will progress on a gentle gradient, watching instructional films followed by simple assignments to complete.
In Session 1: Introduction (A set of short exercises, total drawing time: 2hrs 15min.)
You will learn these essential skills:
Prepare your grid and drawing materials
Free-form sketching on an isometric grid
Crating to ensure drawings fit on your page
Use correct line weight
How to make a Third Angle Projection drawing
How to read 2D information and turn it into a 3D sketch
In Session 2: Brain Food (A set of short exercises, total drawing time: 2hrs 30min.)
Your cognitive skills will be strengthened with spatial rotation exercises and games to spot and draw the differences between simple geometric volumes. Your hand skills and muscle memory will be exercised to improve cognition with trace-over techniques. You will learn how to:
Create a proportional drawing in isometric
Draw multiples in isometric
Make 3d section cuts
Use your mind's eye to rotate volumes
Draw curved geometry
In Session 3: Drawing Things (A set of short exercises, total drawing time: 1hr 25min.)
You will apply what you have learnt to:
Use a scale ruler to make a 1:20 drawing of a jacuzzi housing
Build up a drawing of a window and roof scheme from simple geometric volumes
Draw the intersection profile of a steel detail encased in cement
And in Session 4: Onward Journey
A film showing how structural, facades and electrical engineers use Isometric drawing to visualise ideas and solutions in their daily workflow. You will also be given some references to further educational sites to continue to develop your drawing.
What you’ll learn
Draw freehand 3d shapes on trace over an isometric grid making simple to more complex forms
Learn how to use 'crating,' correct line weight to make shapes accurately up to presentation standard
Understand Plan, Elevation and End views (Third Angle Projection) of objects
Make 3d section cuts
Rotate 3d volumes spatially
Draw a 1:20 scale cast component
Are there any course requirements or prerequisites?
We recommend course participants are a minimum age of 17, with entry level motor skills, e.g. an ability to trace over shapes accurately
You will need a pencil, A4 paper, thin and thick pens, ruler and scale ruler, tracing paper and masking tape. You will also need access to an A4 size printer and steady internet connection.
Who this course is for:
High school students or undergraduates seeking a possible career within the built environment
Design Technology teachers looking to improve their sketching / their students sketching skills
Early career Architects / Engineers looking to develop iterative sketching techniques (e.g. massing models)
Anybody seeking a way into 3d freehand drawing without CAD assists. This course will help you to overcome the limiting belief that you can’t draw.
Testimonial
I'm currently taking your course and it's working really well for me. I believe I'm getting the hang of isometric drawing and making great progress. It's helping me strengthen my basic skills which is exactly what I need before moving on to more detailed and technical drawings. Thanks for putting together such a helpful course - Sam J
