THE DRAWING GYM SKETCHBOOK HABIT
(Online and in-person delivery)
3 x 1.5 hour sessions
UP TO 14 PEOPLE / INDIVIDUALS
Sketchbooks are the birthplace of a drawing habit. The function of a sketchbook is to be there when stray ideas drop into your head, or you see something that you want to capture. If you have promised yourself more time to focus on sketching and personal self development, then join us; doing it is easier with a nudge and, ideally, others to do it with.
The 3 x 1.5 hour sessions in this short course are designed to give you three different experiences of sketching; the first as a way of gathering visual information rapidly, the second for improving observational skills, the third for generating ideas visually.
The course is for all levels of ability.
Session 1 : Rapid Sketch practice
The session will equip you with a selective approach to how and what you sketch, so a photographic likeness is not your only option / goal in every sketch you undertake.
The session will be made up of rapid sketches (each between 3-15 minutes long) so we can adopt a technique that is appropriate for the focus of our sketches, which will be alternately tone, line, and texture.
Session 2 : Colour Pencil Portrait
We will make a trial portrait, in four stages, working from the general to specific volumes in the face, using cool and warm colour. We will then work from a colour photograph of a head and apply the method to study colour temperature and tone to make a convincing 3d sketch.
Session 3 : An introduction to Sketchnoting
We will practice fundamental diagramming skills as a means of communicating relationships between time, space, people and objects. A warm up exercise will help you practice thinking up objects, signs and symbols for representing situations or a concept, then you will go on to translate a familiar scenario into a visual form without the use of words.
