Laurence Wood - Designing shelter with communities hit by natural disasters

Listen to Trevor Flynn’s first guest; Architect Laurence Wood, whose post-disaster reconstruction skills take him to places in the world in the aftermath of war or natural disasters. On-site Laurence co-designs shelter and infrastructure systems in careful consultation with local craftspeople and communities, and his design sketches play a key role in this as he communicates typically across up to four different languages within the local construction teams.

Laurence runs the Year 5 MArch unit ‘Design for Displacement’ at the University of Dundee which looks at the rise of climate displacement and leads hands-on working visits for his students to disaster hit areas where they learn about the challenges and ascending issues involved.
